5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky but fun, May 6, 2011

The SH-01 is a portable analog synthesizer based on Roland's proprietary virtual analog synthesis tehcniques, Unique features include three oscilators ("tones") per patch, with separate LFO/FILTER/AMP sections per oscillator.

The separate sections turn each patch into mixing three synthesizers together into one note. This can be a little tricky to deal with, but the results are worth the effort. Unfortunately, there's no way to copy just one part to a different tone, so this has to be done by hand. You can copy an entire tone to another tone, however.

Getting used to it just means playing with it for a while, learning about the new possibilities offereed by this architecture. It generates a wide variety of sounds, from beautiful strings and pads to excellent leads.

All in all, a good synth for beginnners and pros.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value & a lot of fun, January 3, 2012
This review is from: Roland Gaia SH-01 Synthesizer
If you are looking for an affordable keyboard that allows you to capture that 80s analog synthesizer sound, look no further. Roland has included lots of easy & fun analog-like features into its GAIA SH-01 portable digital synthesizer. Three independent tone generators (featuring familiar LFO, Osc, Filt, Amp & ADSRs) can be layered in limitless combinations. Lots of knobs & sliders allow you to create infinite patches & save/recall them using onboard or USB storage. The synthesizer output can be routed through an effects section with distortion, flanging, delay-line & reverb before producing its stereo, mono & headphone outputs.

There is a powerful preprogrammed arpeggiator & a phrase recorder/player with tap-tempo capability. The 37-key, velocity-sensitive keyboard has good action & is solid. A pitch bender & modulation lever and an optical hand-sensor allow you to add expression & special effects. As a hidden bonus, there is an additional polyphonic General-MIDI... Read more
