Her teacher suggested looking online to find an inexpensive beginner instrument. She is using the violin in her lessons and her teacher says it's great. It stays in tune and it get's a pretty nice sound (when the teacher plays it, LOL). The horsehair on the bow is rough and several pieces were already broken, tangled, or nearly pulled out. Tightening the hair made this less apparent, but it's still visible. The pegs do not move easily, and the strings don't stay tuned...I don't necessarily think this is a fault of the violin, as I'd read that is a pretty common problem and bought peg drops (that I don't have yet) to combat the problem. Other than that, once the strings are nearly tuned, it sounds nice. Not great, and it's certainly not something I'd even want to play in an orchestra, but I think it'll be fine to learn on.
